“You’re too emotional to lead”

Have you ever been told you’re too bossy, or too emotional in your leadership style?

Stings, doesn’t it.

Maybe it was that you’re too friendly. Or not approachable enough. Or too ambitious for your age.

Whatever the feedback was, whether it was right at the start of your career or during your last appraisal, that stuff sticks and pops up in your mind at the most inconvenient times.

And whether it’s dressed up as constructive feedback or in the ‘spirit of radical candour’, I want you to know this:

It says a whole lot more about the person saying it than it does about you.

Let me say it more plainly. It’s their shit. It’s not your shit.

What interests me, is how it affects how you show up.

Have you tried to change how you lead in order to fit in? Have you tempered who you are to be acceptable? Are you waiting for permission to lead in a way you believe is best?

Everywhere I look, I see brilliant, values-led leaders not having the impact they want because they’re afraid of attracting negativity.

And it drives me nuts, because the world needs you to lead exactly as who you are.

That’s why I created my free masterclass, Unleash the Authentic Leader Within’ – if this post resonates with you, come along and learn how to stop pleasing, and start leading.
