Photos on CVs - 5 Reasons it’s a Terrible Idea
On Friday I was asked to appear on BBC Radio Tees, to give my opinion on the topic of providing photos with CVs.
This was due to the recent Twitter storm generated by a Leeds-based chef, who requested this very thing, when advertising for Front of House staff.
I’m not going to comment on this individual situation, however I will draw on my decades of experience in recruitment and career coaching to give my opinion.
No, no, nope, never, no.
I believe in meritocracy. That’s the best person for the job, based on their qualifications and experience.
The societal implications for turning a job search into a tinder-esque process are hideous, particularly from a diversity and inclusion perspective
I work largely in the tech sector, where imposter syndrome is rife. The added stress of having to supply a photo may totally put people off
Morally, great applicants may refuse to apply as they don’t want to work for a company where their looks are important
I have NEVER had a client ask me for photos of applicants, and quite frankly I wouldn’t work with those that did. I have had clients say they’re keen to see female applicants, however the best person for the job has ultimately got it
I’d love to get your thoughts on this topic, yey or ney?
