Do you know what happens to you when your Imposter is activated?

Do you know what happens to you when your Imposter is activated?

You’re probably familiar with the physical symptoms - it feels horrible.

Sinking feeling in the pit of your stomach, tightness in your chest, sweaty palms, creeping feeling of dread…

But did you know that this happens because your amygdala is triggered - the tiny almond-shaped thing between your shoulders and neck, responsible for triggering the flight or fight response.

We have this because in cave man times, it was a handy tool from escaping from danger, say a sabre tooth tiger.

Unfortunately we haven’t evolved past this - to understand the difference between a real and perceived danger, so you might experience this as:

📍flight - wanting to run away from a meeting (nervous wee or feeling sick comes into this too)

📍 fight - getting angry or defensive, for example if you feel rejected, or blaming others

📍freeze - going ‘tharn’, everything shutting down and the mask coming up - numbing and distracting yourself also comes into this

📍fawn - going into people-pleaser mode

These are all pretty instantaneous, but what’s really problematic is the longer term effects, if we don’t do something about it, if we just squish it down and follow a ‘fake it until you make it’ approach.

We all have an Imposter Signature - an event that occurred between the ages of 5-7.

This created an unconscious lens, that shapes your worldview and governs everything - your beliefs, actions, behaviours.

And when your Imposter is activated this means this lens instantly, quietly and insidiously slides down into place - click.

And is silently running the show - even as you believe the danger has passed and you’re back in the driving seat.

Your Imposter is delighted - it believes it’s doing its duty by keeping you safe - but actually it’s keeping you firmly, frustratingly and benevolently locked in your comfort zone.

👉 Say your Imposter Signature is ‘I’m not good enough’.

And you experienced a tricky situation - you lost a big client, which meant a massive dent in your finances.

Your Imposter could be showing up as ‘I’m not good enough to run a business - I can’t make enough money’.

The instant symptoms might be feeling rejected, panic, sick feelings etc. etc.

BUT then you got ahold of yourself, made a brilliant business development plan, and set off determinedly to fill the financial hole in your business.

BUT BUT BUT - you don’t realise it - but everything you do, every call you make, every post you put out, every pitch and offer you craft - are ALL tinged with the lens of ‘I’m not good enough’.

And this is what is keeping you stuck, keeping you locked in the same old frustrating loops, the same results, despite your best efforts.

👉 If this is resonating with you, if you are having a visceral reaction to this, thinking ‘holy cow, this explains a lot’ - I invite you to sit with it today, let it sink in.
